Famous Engagement Rings and Diamonds - Spirit of de Grisogono

The Spirit of de Grisogono is the largest cut black diamond on earth, and is also the fifth biggest cut diamond on the planet! The diamond was 587 diamond carats in weight as rough and was discovered in Central Western Africa.

the diamond was then taken to Switzerland to the famous Swiss jeweller De Grisogono to cut to 312.24ct - which is the weight of the diamond today. The diamond is now set in a white gold ring with 702 relatively small white diamonds totalling a whopping 36.69 carats. Now if I was designing Engagement Rings I would take a second thought before trying to incorporate this massive black diamond in a diamond ring!

Famous Engagement Rings and Diamonds - Carbonado

Carbonado is the original name for black diamonds, while the term 'black diamonds' is now more commonly used. These are very rare stones and therefore very rare indeed to see in Engagement Rings. They have been found in the Central African Republic and Brazil. The natural colour can also be a dark grey. Carbonado diamonds are slightly more porous than other diamonds.

Carbonado diamonds seem to be one of the more mysterious types of diamonds in the sense that less is known about how they are produced than many other diamonds. The most common theory is that they are produced by direct conversion of carbon with high pressure deep under ground over time. There are more elaborate theories as to their creation, such as shock metamorphism as meteorites hit the earth, to an origin from outer space.

All I know is I wouldn't say no to offering this black diamond as an engagement ring!
