Polish and Symmetry are important quality aspects of a diamond as they affect how well the diamond sparkles. Polish referring to the surface finish and Symmetry to how well the facets line up with each other.

At 1791 Diamonds we only sell Engagement Rings with the three top grades of diamond Polish and Symmetry; Good, Very Good and Excellent.

What is Diamond Polish

Diamond polish refers to the how well the surface of the diamond has been 'finished'. The grading system starts at 'Poor', then 'Fair', 'Good', 'Very Good and 'Excellent'.

A diamond with Very Good or Excellent Polish is is free from visible pits, chips, scratches, polish lines or burn marks. A diamond with a fair or poor polish will lose some of it's lustre so we don't sell fair or poor diamonds at 1791.

What is Diamond Symmetry

Diamond Symmetry is a grade for how well the facets of a diamond match up. It ensures that the table is even, that the facets are symmetrical and that there are no extra facets.

The grades start at at 'Poor', then 'Fair', 'Good', 'Very Good and 'Excellent'.

A diamond with Very Good or Excellent Symmetry will sparkle beautifully since the facet placements will allow for the light to move freely inside and out of the diamond.

Polish and Symmetry - Round Brilliant Diamonds

Round brilliant shape diamonds have not only a Polish and Symmetry grade; they also have a Cut grade. There is an industry standard formula for cutting round brilliants. The cut grade reflects how close to this 'ideal' proportions the finished product is.

All round brilliant engagement rings at 1791 Diamonds have Very Good or Excellent Cut and Good, Very Good or Excellent Polish and Symmetry.

Polish and Symmetry - Fancy Cut Diamonds

Fancy shape diamonds generally don't come with a Cut grade since there isn't yet an industry standard for grading the Cut of these shapes. However, they do come with Polish and Symmetry grades.

Choosing a fancy shape diamond with Very Good or Excellent Polish and Symmetry grades will mean that you not only have a special and unique Engagement Ring, it also means that the diamond will reflect light beautifully! A fancy shape diamond with Good Polish and Symmetry may have slightly impeded lustre but it will be less expensive.
